Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

By: Rachel Johnson, Syracuse University undergraduate student

Recently, I spoke with a woman who mentioned that she is an extremely healthy eater. However, she also told me her biggest down fall to her eating habits is her sweet tooth. She asked me about snacks that were are both sweet and nutritious. I began to suggest that she try a trail mix containing chocolate, when an unsatisfied look came across her face. I quickly suggested a bowl of mixed fruit – yet again the same look. This experience led me to wonder about healthy treats that can be both satisfying to one’s sweet tooth and healthy at the same time. Below are examples of a few delicious snacks that can satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth.

1. Peanut butter apple sandwich Select your favorite apple (Granny Smith, Red Delicious, etc.). Core the apple, then slice the apple. Make sure your apple slices are circular and about an ½ inch – 1 inch thick. Next, get about 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and spread it on one side of the apple slice and do the same for the other apple slice. To add a sweet factor to this snack sprinkle dark chocolate morsels upon the one of the slices, about ½ a tablespoon. Also, if you would like to give your apple sandwich more of a crunch to your snack, add granola to it.
